May Syndrome: Challenges Faced by Air Conditioning Services Companies During the Extreme Summer

As temperatures soar and demand for cooling intensifies, air conditioning services companies face a phenomenon we call the ‘May Syndrome.’  These are a cluster of challenges faced by the industry and offers practical solutions that customers can incorporate to minimize the impact.

Key Challenges

Exceeding Design Limits

Challenge: Air conditioners are designed to operate efficiently up to an ambient temperature of 42 degrees Celsius. However, during May, temperatures often exceed 45 degrees, causing units to malfunction. In most cases the cooling of the system starts to derate giving lesser than expected cooling.

Solution: Customers should consider upgrading to air conditioning systems designed for higher ambient temperatures or using auxiliary cooling methods, such as shading outdoor units and improving ventilation around them. When an air conditioning system is installed, you should have a professional team that helps design and install the systems correctly. Under capacity and Higher capacity both have impact on the performance of the systems.

High Temperatures in Shafts

Challenge: Air conditioning units installed in shafts can experience temperatures over 50 degrees due to the accumulation of heat from multiple units, leading to frequent malfunctions. Warm air being light rise in the shaft and in some poorly ventilated shafts the temperatures cross over 50degrees. This pattern has been observed in new buildings the earlier occupants complain it was cooling earlier when we moved in and now after few years its stopped cooling when every premise is occupied, and all ac outdoors are functioning in the summer months.

Solution: Ensure proper ventilation in shafts and consider installing exhaust fans to dissipate heat. Regular maintenance and inspection can help identify and mitigate potential issues early.

Technician Health and Efficiency

Challenge: The intense heat wave causes technicians to fall sick, reducing the number of services calls they can manage each day.

Solution: Schedule regular maintenance before the peak summer months to avoid emergency calls. Customers should opt for annual maintenance contracts (AMCs) to ensure timely servicing without overburdening technicians during extreme heat. The trick is to prevent a breakdown rather than be reactive to a probable breakdown.

Cooling Diversity Loss in Commercial Spaces

Challenge: In large commercial spaces, if one unit fails, others can usually compensate. However, this diversity advantage is often lost in May, leading to immediate cooling issues and increased pressure on technician availability.

Solution: Implement a robust maintenance schedule and ensure all units are in optimal condition before the summer. Installing backup units for critical areas or investing in high-efficiency systems can also provide a buffer during peak demand.

Spare Part Availability

Challenge: Spare part availability and supply are impacted as most Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) focus on equipment sales during this period and supply and logistics on spares takes a back seat in comparison to new equipment supply.

Solution: Maintain an inventory of critical spare parts to ensure quick repairs. Customers should work closely with service providers to ensure they have the necessary parts on hand before the summer season begins. This is extremely important in critical applications like Hospitality, Healthcare, and Large commercial applications.

However, by understanding these challenges and implementing proactive solutions, customers can help minimize the impact and ensure their cooling systems function efficiently during the hottest months.
